I’m not really big on tunes for charidee after the horrors of Band Aid, and also this violates my ‘No Coldplay In Mashups Ever’ rule (‘A Bridge Over You’ being a vocal mashup of Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ and Coldplay’s Fix You) but it’s for a very good cause. And the S&G track is one of my favourite tracks of all time, and is completely appropriate as it’s The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir made from doctors, nurses and NHS staff.
Not only do proceeds go to Mind and Carers UK, but also it’s a visible way of supporting the NHS and putting two fingers up to the Government as it’s part of the I Love The NHS campaign. And extra bonus – if it gets 3,000 sales in the next day it will knock Justin Bieber off the top spot (it’s currently at #2 in the midweek chart).
And crazily, Justin Bieber agrees – he’s tweeted to his followers to buy the single also, maybe being Canadian he understands the proud feeling that our National Health Service creates? In one sense it’s completely mad, being sentimental about a health system? But on the other, it’s an amazing service that needs defending, and you’d be hard pushed to find anyone in the UK who hasn’t had to rely on it at some point. It does an incredible job despite so many cuts and interference from managers, trusts and politicians.
So yes, I love the NHS and I like this single, go buy it! For the NHS! For Bieber! For Mind and Carers UK! For Sparta! Err…maybe not the last one.
