Radiophonic Workshop

Radiophonic Podcasts

Here are a couple of Radiophonic podcasts/mixes I’ve been listening to – first is Attic Podcast #6 which they recently reposted, which is a good introduction with tracks from Maddalena Fagandini, Daphne Oram, John Baker and of course Delia Derbyshire all the way through to Glynis Jones, Malcolm Clarke, Peter Howell and Elizabeth Parker.

As you can hear from the likes of Schlum Rooli by Glynis Jones & Malcolm Clarke that AFX-style vocal manipulations, hauntology and quiet ambience didn’t start in the 90’s or 00’s but in the 1960’s and 70’s. I’d forgotten how modern it sounds.

The second is more of a quietist affair – indeed it’s from Quietworld label, Quietude #10 which seems more diverse, taking in as well as the ones mentioned above Tristram Cary, Paul Magrs, Paddy Kingsland and various sound cues from Doctor Who.

Also some newer readers/listeners might not know that Radio Clash and digitaldebris (which is now back on iTunes! Finally!) have done podcasts on the Radiophonic Workshop and Delia Derbyshire respectively. You can listen also over at Mixcloud or download via those links.
