Great article on DJ Screw from RedBullAcademy of all places. Really sad that him and quite a few of that gang aren’t here today to see how chopping and screwing is everywhere – when someone in hiphop slows the beat down, chops it or does that slowed down rap, it’s basically a nod to him. Even all that woozy chillwave cassette analogue culture must be influenced…it’s everywhere.
And it’s beyond hiphop – been checking a lot of disco edits recently for the next mix, and quite a few of them are slowed down, repeated, stuttered, looped…the digital version of his sound. But as they say in the article, like anything analogue (digital crossprocess is one that makes me LOL in photography) you can’t beat it with Serato or a computer…and the crazy thing he did all this live, with turntables onto cassette tape. People talk about Greatest Of All Time and best DJ and all that jazz, but I think they forgot about Screw.
An example is above with him moodily screwing and chopping Missy Elliott’s Can’t Stand The Rain…great stuff.
