I could go into a long rant about egos, a bunch of shifty looking millionaires spouting off about ‘poor artists’, said artists moaning about Spotify and then moving all their content to TIDAL which they have equity in, Beats and promises of better payouts that seem either a pyramid scheme or no better than other services, and money will probably still go to these artists even if you stream Burzum all day…but this image from Exploding Actress says it all, really. Here’s a better analyis of TIDAL than I could ever do – and I agree with it all. I wish they could pull a United Artists – a streaming service that like Bandcamp really benefits the musician without label/management interrupt? HELL YEAH!
If these artists put their money – or their tracks – where there mouth is, or like the article said if the Kanyes, Jack Whites or Will.i.ams of the world get free reign to do something creative it will most likely be good, and be something new. But everyone suspects they’ll just hedge their bets and it’ll be another Myspace v2.0, and the current offering doesn’t really say anything new. Time will tell.
