If you edit or work in film or video, or just like to be visually literate (hint: it makes films so much better when you know why they do what they do, it’s like you fall in love with the film all over again) then Tony Zhou’s Every Frame A Painting series are well worth a look. The Edgar Wright one above sums up why I’m so MEH about US comedies like Anchorman, Hangover etc – it’s true they just stand around yakking at each other. No slapstick, no invention, no visual comedy. They’re not even that funny, unlike Edgar Wright’s movies which are genius.
I work in this area (sorta) and even I learned something, in his excellent analyses of why Jackie Chan movies rule – I knew about the ‘double punch’ – that can be a cliche and overdone in many Chinese copies, but I never thought about the editing and static nature of Chan’s movies, they really do aid the rhythm, the punch feels like a punch, and the star isn’t Superman, and cutting on the punch is a waste of a hit: (via Jeremy Biggs)
Even his Bayhem episode points out that analysing the shittest of movies tells us something:
