Commonwealth? Well not for the LGBTQ

With the Commonwealth Games nearly over and seem to be a success, the assumption is the Commonwealth is some happy cuddly family. Well not quite.

This graphic gave me cause to pause* – 42 out of the 53 Commonwealth countries still have anti-gay laws on the books, making being gay/queer a crime, and are enforcing them. Situation is not good for LGBTQ in Uganda, Nigeria, India who recently went backwards with a new set of anti-gay laws and Brunei, despite the recent win with the Ugandan judiciary throwing out the law because it didn’t have the proper quorum.

Stonewall has more information, but it’s surprising since you’d think the values of the Empire would seep down – but sadly I think people don’t realise those were extremely homophobic and the legacy is still there, despite Britain and others moving on. And the Queen as she’s shown in countries she is still head of, takes a strangely off-hand view on such things, while meddling in others, like wanting her family to be completely secret in interfering with public life, or her Trinidadian or animal blood lust.
