There are a few unspoilt wildernesses left, one in the Arctic and the one in children’s imaginations. Both are under threat by Shell and more worryingly by association, LEGO. The Danish company has partnered again with Shell selling toys from service stations to kids, and I really expected better from LEGO, as a Danish company. I had hoped they’d stopped producing toys with an evil oil company’s name on them, but apparently not.
As the LEGO CEO said “We are saddened when the Lego brand is used as a tool in any dispute between organisations.” – making this seem some kind of ‘think of the children! Nothing to do with us!’ ploy. But Shell is intentionally using pester-power on parents, using children to sell it’s oil and seem family-friendly. I don’t see why LEGO should have anything to do with such a bad actor when it comes to the environment and political stability, amongst many things. Things that impact children the world over, and will impact their children too, if they get to have any…
LEGO’s motto is “Only the best is good enough” – not for polar bears or the planet’s future and thus children, it seems. Then again, what do you expect on a plastic toy that probably relies on Shell’s oil to be made? Although it’s recent moves to more sustainable and ‘green’ production seems completely at odds with this current partnership.
