TV Girl - French Exit

TV Girl – French Exit

Always got time and a soft spot for TV Girl at Radio Clash – covered and played their previous EPs on the podcast and blog, and they’re nice people to boot! And now they have a new album called French Exit (yeah I know, you wait for ages and two albums come along, like buses – was writing the DM post when this popped up :-D).

It starts in usual TV Girl fashion, 60’s sunshine pop meets indie with scratches & hip hop beats and fuzzy slowgaze ambience, but then Talk to Strangers hits…this sounds very different to the TV Girl of old, much darker (although there always was a darker undercurrent to the happy sound), and sounds like a luau in an echo chamber. I approve. The Getaway is great also, nice spoken word sampleage. Also the French in the title seems very apt, those sweeping strings and guitars is so ye-ye pop, especially on Her And Her Friend. Sunshine, a forest somewhere in France, a discarded picnic…;-) And if you like psych you’ll love Come When You Call, too, a different more electronic shivery sound. Again, I like these developments…

And probably the only sunshine we’ll see in UK this year, anyway!
