No not the sound of a new band (although it would make a good band title…I reserve that one) but an amazing programme for schools from 1969 where kids were making experimental music. Some spooky stuff at the end (and quite sample-able in places). (via Ben Soundhog)
This lead me on a little journey, I had heard of Cardew but not of Brian Dennis (he of the embarrassing hair in this clip) and I found an LP with music by the Scratch Orchestra and one Robert Worby. I’m assuming this is the same Rob Worby that came to Sheffield Hallam and taught me and about 2 others the wonders of this new-fangled Cubase – on a Mac I think. I was using Bars and Pipes on my Amiga then and was intrigued so went along…nice bloke. If I’d known about his history I’d have dragged him along to the Nether Edge Music Collective…yes as art students we had our own experimental group, where we hit stuff and made a lot of noise.
Well Ben responded with this video about the Scratch Orchestra and featuring Rob, and it’s also a good watch too…although being Associated Rediffusion / Victor Lewis Smith you have to have some clunky linking device. Still, some real history here.
