What would Pussy Riot Do?

To change the world the biggest hint is
Art is the one that convinces
That’s why they always try to buy it
But they couldn’t buy off Pussy Riot…

You want bands who want sell you things
Or bands who want to tell you things?…

Heart inspires
Art inspires
Pussy Riot shows me why
Cos inspiration’s still the one resource
the 1% can’t buy

Just think how much strength you lend them
Every slight way that you befriend them
You’re the power
You’re the biz
The world is what you say it is
The art you make
The things you say
Defines what is or aint OK

Not shoes or sodas
You’re the star
You define what values are

WWPRD (What Would Pussy Riot) is the new single by Jeffery Lewis & The Rain – and says what needs to be said. Seems the cynical story of ‘Bands need to sell out’ and the acceptance of the ‘devil’s bargain’ has ruled the day, but fuck it. It doesn’t have to be that way. And Pussy Riot shows how it should be done.

And not just musically either – the message about ‘The things you say, Defines what is or aint OK’ could as much apply to Twitter and mass social action and protest as what brands you do or don’t endorse (the only brand endorsements I’ve ever supported was Moby who then gave all the money for the car ads to anti-motorist groups, and Chumbawamba who I think did something similar – use the system to destroy itself, that’s real anarchy rather than drinking loads and smashing shit up!). Just that bands and celebrities have a voice, and they can choose to support the system, or be more like Russell Brand.

Oh and this is more punk rock than most modern bands that call themselves that, because they bought the style and not the content.

I prefer the spoken word to the single, but here’s that version live:
