Doug Stanhope on royalty. Yep, it IS embarrassing, and I wish we’d get rid of them. Or at least take back all our possession they have appropriated and they can pretend to be king and queens but on *their* dime. And find some sad deluded tourists to bow at them, they aren’t my superiors due to some random accident of birth and not talent, they’re all as thick as shit and completely reactionary Conservative fools who’d rather blow away small animals (probably because peasants aren’t allowed anymore – and that includes Wills and Harry) and I refuse to bow to them, I am not their ‘subject’.
As I said elsewhere, sadly the royal family’s nearly 400 year ‘reprise’ since the Civil War did what needed to be done, is like having a massive HERE BE COMPLETE CHUMPS sign on the U.K. – it’s a sign that if the public put up with paying for that frankly ridiculous and medieval situation paying for our own subjugation, they’ll put up with *anything*. Tories, libraries and hospital closing, ‘austerity’, bankers bonuses, poll and bedroom taxes, NHS closure, Tempora, the Lords and expenses scandals, closing off public spaces and banning protest.
Seriously, only when the monarchy are gone will any of this be solved, because while that bloated and arcane institution is there, not only can they actively stop any progress, they are a symbol of a complete lack of it. Oh and we need a real constitution while we’re at it, not some scraps thrown from the Queen’s table.
