Wasn’t sure at first about the new John Grant album, after hearing the ‘electronic’ direction with the Pale Green Ghosts single which 6Music is playing a lot at the moment, but I checked it out anyway and fell in love with it. It’s not all electronic, and as you can here with this excellently wry GMF video (here in thankfully not the sanitised version, a la ‘Forget You’) he’s retained the style and wit of the first album too. Love the video – John Grant was in my city and my usual haunting places and I didn’t know – Boo! Love the Barbican shots, Kew (Barbican does have a greenhouse area like that, but it was very rundown last time I was there, it could be there though), going for a kebab etc. Of the album I think ‘Ernest Borgnine’ is my favourite…outed as a Borgnine fan! with the personal lyrics:
“Doc ain’t lookin’ at me; says I got the disease.
Now what did you expect? You spent your life on your knees.
It was never too late. Tell me–what were you afraid of?
Do the numbers in your head or get out your calculator.”
And yes the ‘You could be laughing 65% more of the time’ lyric.
And he’s coming back to London on the 15th to perform, and I’m going!
