If the kids are looking for things to nick inspiration for that 90’s sound they can’t go far wrong with 808 State, as did seemingly Silverclub (with a helluva lot of LCD). Finally found out where that ‘What You Need’ sample is from Ancodia, it’s from Unique. Also never knew there was a video, I’m guessing this was off The Chart Show hence being so short…I had 808:90 on cassette with that amazing silver cover, initially disappointed cos the Pacific 202 mix was a bit pants which is what I originally bought it for, and twas a very short album…but I never could stop playing it. A real influence of mine along with LFO – Frequencies which came a little later.
And Thelma Houston, ‘You Used To Hold Me So Tight’ which I should have gotten after all these years.
All you Lifelikes (who I got to eventually spot the Unique via his later sampling of it), Kavinskys and Clasixx bow down, 800 State was mashing up rare 80’s groove when you were in your nappies 😉
And I don’t think many people have combined egyptian (?) horn Nile ambience and beats so wonderfully – and yes I’m going to use the wanky e-word – evocatively as Sunrise, this and Nephatiti on EX:El probably lead to my later Black Dog/Plaid obsession, and I spent many hours trying to do off-kilter weird sounds and samples on my Amiga – although admittedly never sampled Wonka like they did (something Aphex later did, too):
