Coming out of a rather trollish thread on Dangerous Minds about Odd Future and Tyler, one of the posters posted this excellent video by Death Grips as a response – which in that WTF moment to my mind blows away any of the sadly misplaced Tyler – Goblin hype in one video. Love the whole feel of the video, creepy yet very simple, and that static-eating-away-at-your-soul 80’s feel is very current and appropriate.
Turns out the mixtape ExMilitary is brilliant, and shows a lot of progress from the eponymous Death Grips album from last year – less shouty and more, well, wonderfully scary, but with enough twists and turns and warps to keep it fresh.
This is where it’s at, rather than Tyler & co’s rather tired obvious moves – saw them at Coachella and was so so so disappointed…I know it’s a bit much to hope 20 year olds to be the future of a new hiphop, but it’s happened before and so badly needed – but instead Tyler wheeled out the usual tired Eminem/Dre style shock tactics (yawn) but it looks like in their wake and alternatively there is a lot bubbling up from a more chillwave/experimental/daisy?/tripped out backpacker-yet-not-boring hiphop angle. So maybe if Odd Future become the Pearl Jam of horrorcore/a nu-hiphop at least there is hope for the future.
