John Lydon by Clive Rowland

Not another John – John Lydon on 6Music

You need to hear this – John Lydon on 6Music’s ‘The First Time’ on the state of music and the UK today, PiL reform, his eclectic and very mashup approach to music, Malcolm McLaren (interestingly echoing my take on McLaren’s death and the deification, he’s right about concentrating on the good but there was sadly so much bad too) and inspiring Oasis and his dislike of Coldplay and Radiohead:

You can hear it in the UK for the next week on iPlayer or at my MP3 rip here.

I was giggling when listening earlier at Lydon totally eviscerating Matt Everitt on his fawning love of Radiohead…he’s right they have no soul (they did early on, an anger in Creep but recently that’s why their music leaves me totally cold) and his distrust of ‘jazz’ and ‘progressive’ musics and love of dub and rave and syncretic ecletic music cultures.

This dovetails totally in me currently reading ‘Energy Flash’ by Simon Reynolds about the rave ‘mess ethic’, an early mashup culture and one looked down upon by the Detroit, garage and acid jazz afficionados – even though ‘ardcore eventually created drum and bass – a totally new genre and really something only the UK could have created mixing dub subbass, syncopation (same word root as syncope, fainting, which in medieval times was caused the mass mania of dancers doing St Vitus’s Dance), hiphop and ragga, breakbeats etc – from the Carribean to the UK via the US…the book and the above show are both heartily recommended.

I also posted the Bernard Sumner interview as well, which New Order fans would love especially about the mashup genesis of Blue Monday. What is with the Beeb and their 7 day iPlayer when Channel 4’s 4oD is a month? Shame.
