Come hear dear boy have a Sigur…
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery as they say, but when it comes to advertising I doubt it’s either sincere OR flattering. sigur rós have recently spoken out against the advertising agencies and brands who have asked them for their music, been refused (sigur rós doesn’t license ANY of their music for adverts – only TV/film & charity) then a suspiciously similar piece appears a short while later – as with the Audi piece above after the agency asked for permission and were denied.
Here are some really shockingly blatant examples from Peugeot, HSBC and Orange – brands who could afford to license something original. This is the only time advertising will appear on Radio Clash to lambast the thieving gets who take amazingly beautiful and spiritual music, and copy it for profit. I think in most of these examples you could argue it’s just similar – or unintentional – until the unmistakable and nonsensical Jónsi-style vocals kick in…
Olsen Olsen, so good they not only named it twice they also duplicated it…
Hoppípolla you don’t stop cos I’m not sloppy, I love this track so I need another copy…
