Last Chance to See – Douglas Adams

Sadly in this 2001 video the most imminently extinct animal is the speaker, Douglas Adams who had a heart attack a few days later.

The message about the world, caring for it and the gods and reasons we create to excuse our behaviour are good ones and well worth watching.

Even if it’s just for the explanation of why there are towels and digital watches in Hitchhikers (gotta love fanboys/girls who ignore the talk subject and go for the silly scifi questions *sigh*).

RIP Douglas – not really explained (well once, maybe twice) how important his work was to me when I was young – I avidly watched the TV series then read all the books at 8 onward. Looking back you can see even then he had a critical view on evolution, gods and what we were doing to ourselves and the planet. Certainly I think it informed my humanist, skeptical and critical view of the world – for sci-fi and comedy done well reveals the absurdity of the human condition via alien cultures…Hitchhiker’s Guide took both the piss out of that culture and also twisted it and used it to great effect – ironically and stealthily in a medium most people dismiss as being throwaway – in this way I do think Hitchhiker’s and his other books are as important as Brief History of Time or the Bible if you must.
