“analogue business model in a digital era”

I love this quote from Ed O’Brien from Radiohead, about to speak at MIDEM about Filesharing:

“I have a problem when people in the industry say ‘it’s killing the industry, it’s the thing that’s ripping us apart’. I don’t actually believe it is … (Pirates) might not buy an album, but they’re spending their money buying concert tickets, a t-shirt, whatever.

“It’s an analogue business model in a digital era. The business model has to change. You’ve got to license out more music – have more Spotifys, more websites selling more music. You’ve got to make it slightly cheaper to get music in order to compete with the peer-to-peers.”

He goes on to make a really pertinent point that with the shift to digital downloading, most 14-17 year olds don’t have a credit card – this surely must restrict them buying music, especially with the death of many record shops and death of the single as a physical format?

And when I wrote to Mandelson about this via my MP I pointed out the likes of Spotify (who will become centre stage when the US site launches, and when streaming is counted in the charts next year) and such licensing models as the way forward, not criminalising teenagers in the region of $640k for sharing 30 songs, for example.

The idea that the music and film industries are being damaged by filesharing is laughable now the film industry is on it’s record year out of several, which will go stratospheric with the likes of Avatar – and that in the music sphere whereas traditional records might be down, digital, PRS revenue and live are also having record profits – so the likes of ‘Sir’ [Make] Bono [History]* are pontificating as rich pop stars about the poor ickle independent artists, and the film industry is doing same…funny they didn’t seem to give a fig about those before, in fact seemed to want to make everything MegaCorp and kill all the indies.

I wonder what the indies think of such patronising twaddle?

* according to my friend Steve Mr Green-and-oh-so-caring Bono once left his hat behind on tour and flew it first class on Concorde to where the next gig was. What’s the carbon points for a super-sonic hat for a twat?
