Guitar Hero Hero! DJ Hero ‘no comment’…

Checking out what MC Lars is upto nowadays (loved that Screamo track back in the day) and after the disappointment that ‘Bein Green’ wasn’t a Kermit cover (boo!) I found this gem about the perils of Guitar Hero (this one goes out to Scott formerly of The Night Nurse Show who is a real GH addict :-P)

It’s a fun video, and a good song – love the spoofs of GH using potplants and the rock cliches and the truths that ‘Grand Theft Auto doesn’t make you a player’ and that ‘beating Guitar Hero doesn’t mean you play guitar!’

According to the YouTube comments there’s moves afoot to make this a DLC (downloadable content for Guitar Hero) – how META is that? LOL.

I wonder if DJ Hero will similarly provoke such spoofs? I might have heard some of the in-game mashups accidentally and they might have ranged from inspired to great with a few ??? ones, and I might have been able to spot who did what because many of the mashup artists I’ve played over the last 4 years on this very show are behind it; I even might have seen the early cut of the commercial over someone’s shoulder, I couldn’t possibly comment. 😉 I have to take the fifth on that one. What? We don’t have that here? Damn. I can’t comment further though, certain people will get angry. Just take it as red that I think this game will be amazing from the stuff I erm, haven’t seen.

In fact the game was inspired by a visit to Bastard, the night at the Asylum. Ooh you weren’t paying attention at the back there? You see mashups are about to take over the world, and you didn’t notice cos it was a little club in London that closed years ago, and you probably wondered why I was blathering on about it so much on this blog since 2004. More fool you 😉 History was made there, definitely. 7 years in the making, but September the game launches and is a product of something small yet important. Jury is out whether Bastard and the like will get writeups on Wikipedia and the history books, but it should, a lot has come out of events like these, a lot more than the official yet biased histories say blatantly written by hacks who weren’t there.

And games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band have directly influenced and helped the mashup scene through hackers naughtily obtaining the multittracks from the software *where’s that fifth again* so it’s interesting and maybe ironic (although I think unintentional given the long timeline) that it goes full circle and there is a mashup/DJ game…it is very ‘Pop Will Eat Itself By Videogame’. Certainly I think the game will be a hit with the mashup community and way beyond, and who knows, it might inspire a renaissance and another mashup goldrush?

So where’s that old dusty Without Me pella gone? 😉
