Steal This Web 2.0

It’s here I’ll reveal secrets of my trade, well not-trade cos I don’t get paid (that almost rhymes!) but I think these methods should be widespread. You might have wondered where I get my videos or tracks for shows…well I’m about to tell you how 😀 (well for the PC at least, other computer owners can find your own workarounds).

My payment? Well go forth and save shows/feeds and maybe one day I’ll need something and you’ll have ripped it…

OK so there is loads of meeja out there in Web 2.0-land – for free, but hark! It isn’t cos you can’t download it…or can you?

Enter Player #1

Orbit Downloader (or HiDownload – but this one is freeware)
OK you’re watching YouTube and it’s something that’ll get pulled in a second, or listening to BBC shows in between router-resets (yes I get that – it’s a problem with their P2P b.s.) and want to keep them – how?

Well use a downloader program like Orbit – it’s free! You even get a nice little ‘grab’ button. In the case of BBC you’ll get a nice RM or FLV file (as with YouTube) – I recommend the latter.

Also works with Myspace and other flash players – so all those ‘unavailable’ tracks are now yours…

FLV FLSchmee

What to do with this FLV gubbins? Well there are converters out there, but the best is a little unknown program called FLVExtract – FLVs are basically a [geek]H264 or Sorensen encoded[/geek] video with an MP3 attached – to just separate them use this wonderful program. Voila instant MP3 from your FLV!

Download Yr YTube

There is a lovely tool which downloads from YouTube AND converts them to MP3 if the previous program gives you grief – YouTube Downloader – now you lovely Web 1.0 anarchist types know, it’s always better to have applications on your computer rather than on the web. Why? Well it’s not possible to C&D you all, but it is possible to pull the many ‘Download from Youtube’ sites out there. If you’re not PC, my apologies but you can use those as well.

Now go off and form a band and work it all out for yourself. I won’t answer any technical queries cos it’s tough love and you need to edumacute y’selfs, y’know? The answers are all out there on the touch of a Privacy Menace search button anyway…that’s what the lazyWeb* is for!

Another YouTube Downloader you should review and try is TubeTilla
The UI and Design is a little better and you can download and convert in 1 step, instead of using the Altervista Downloader..
