RC 234: The Queer History of Pop Part 1 (1960s-1980s)

I’ve been listening to the Story of Pop which again has been repeated on 6Music, but this time also reading the excellent Simon Napier-Bell’s Black Vinyl White Powder and the contrast has been striking – not so much the drug usage which has been there in the BBC series, but the queer element has been definitely not featured. And as we know, from the gay managers and producers of the 1960s to the out and proud pop stars of the 1970s and 80’s the music industry has been pretty pink, especially in pop and dance music.

So I thought as February is Gay History Month it was time to do The Queer History of Pop – no interviews but a lot more music…this was recorded in front of a live audience, well the Radio Clash LIVE! stream and the Ustream webcam – so if you missed that, you missed out. Part Two covering 1990s to present day will be recorded this Wednesday at 8pm – expect riot grrl and a more angry show to the Peace and Love of this one, well excepting Jayne County ;-)

If you like this show you might like the Space Disco shows and the Gay Shame mix.

Mutant Pop 5 – Got the Glitch remix cutup bug

By volume 5 of the Mutant Pop series I was starting to theme them, becoming more like my sets at the time, with a beginning and end and themes between the tracks. As the title says this volume covers the rise of glitch, the mashup originators started branching out towards original tracks and remixing. Cutups closer to the spirit of Negativland also started popped up, usually of a political or humorous sort. (At one DJ occasion Kirk, who gave me Cassetteboy’s Parker Tapes, banned me from playing Fly Me To New York).

Eminem and Missy were still triumphant, but also joined by Electric Six’s Gay Bar which was started by a Remix XFM competition.  Like the legendary Without Me Boomselection remix competition – which GHP’s original version of A Slim McShady was part of, his first bootleg no less –  it also unleashed a deluge of Gay Bar boots on the scene. Who won that XFM competition btw?

Richard X makes a re-appearance, this time not as Girls on Top but a track from his excellent then debut album X-Factor, the female voice might sound familiar, it’s Deborah from Flying Lizards, early 80’s noiseniks/new wave popsters!

And Beyonce starts her ascension, her solo career away from the ever-present Destiny’s Child (I must be the only bootlegger from those times who never made a DC boot?) and you’ll hear more from her from the last volume.

The first track wasn’t the whole track,  just the ‘Digital, Not Analog’ ending hence it being called that on the artwork…I’ve included the original full track here (and the Soundhog bootleg, which I had to fade early due to space on the CD) as well as the ‘proper’ random meaningless title. Which might have seemed a laugh at the time, but doesn’t half become annoying when trying to find something on that album. As does those who don’t tag their work, another annoyance that comes to haunt over the years! Also a few of these suffered from MP3Rot, I don’t think people realise how fragile this legacy is.

RC 219: (Not) Space Disco 3.2: Loving the Alien

We continue the journey through space loving the gay alien with the second part of the  Space Disco 3 show, this is mostly not space disco at all – hence the title – but a continuation of the journey from space disco to electro, funk and chicago house, featuring re-edits and remixes, as well as a lot of 80’s classics. I think this mix works really well, and is one of my best in a long time!

Dedicated to those we’ve lost: Ron Hardy (DJ at the Muzic Box, first person to play acid house), Sylvester (the Black Angel), Patrick Cowley (synth pioneer) and Arthur Russell (future jazz/funk/disco alien).

Big kisses and thanks Thomas for help providing some of the tracks.

RC 218: Space Disco 3.1 – Waiting On My Angel

First part of a new Space Disco show – but rather than the previous shows mostly covering the prime of late 70s Italo Disco and Space Disco, this goes into what happened next, aka Close Encounter of The Third Gender – Where No Man Has Gone Before Without A Whistle And a Glow Stick (And Some Poppers). Aliens, orgies, polysexual, glamorous, dramatic, synthetic, futuristic, camp, dayglow and endlessly pumping, what’s not to like?

So it’s disco, space disco, hi-nrg, electro, experimental funk hybrids into Chicago House – what kept the space beats (and space beast) alive into the 1980s. The first part covers mostly the disco and Hi-NRG era, with occasional forays into very early house music…which gives the episode it’s title.

Both shows are dedicated to those we’ve lost: Ron Hardy (DJ at the Muzic Box, first person to play acid house), Sylvester (the Black Angel), Patrick Cowley (synth pioneer) and Arthur Russell (future jazz/funk/disco alien).

P.S. It was Giorgio Moroder’s birthday yesterday – happy birthday Giorgio!
