Worth watching this clip from a 2010 interview with Stewart Lee on arts funding…I think this very much has come to pass, much more with Cameron and co, where University is where you go to learn jobs that make money. And I think the point about the arts ‘fighting the war on their terms’ is a good one, art should exist for better and bigger reasons than ‘it might make money’ is an important one. I saw this embedded in a recent New Stateman interview with him which bigs up Simon Reynolds (yes those books are great, and important – wider than music criticism anyway)
It’s from a longer interview by Devereux & Onians which covers a lot about the BBC and Channel 4, and Stewart Lee’s inspirations.
