The man who has guided most of my waking dreams in the last 10 or so years is sadly retiring. Thank you Hayao Miyazaki, I owe you so much…a whole world of wonder, Ponyo which expressed childlike wonder of small toddlers like no other film, Totoro and Spirited Away which took you into the spirit world, Nausicaa which told of the warnings of not living with the environment and horrors of war, the modern Japan meets alternative world of The Cat Returns, and now the Wind Rises, still taking risks and refusing to vilify anyone. Really looking forward to it, as long as the nationalists and naysayers don’t get in the way of that.
I sadly suspect it will be a hard sell for Disney, even though it’s obvious from the trailer it’s far from a hagiography or simple patriotic story.
