If I was gay I would think hip-hop hates me

Love this song and video by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Yes hip-hop has a problem, inability to face up with the false-machismo and being gay with “No Homo” and “faggot” and all that shit – as a gay hip-hop fan I do find it hard sometimes. But as Mac says:

If I was gay
I would think hip-hop hates me
Have you read the YouTube comments lately
“Man that’s gay”
Gets dropped on the daily
We’ve become so numb to what we’re sayin’
Our culture founded from oppression
Yeah, we don’t have acceptance for ‘em
Call each other faggots
Behind the keys of a message board
A word routed in hate
Yet our genre still ignores it
Gay is synonymous with the lesser
It’s the same hate that’s caused wars from religion
Gender and skin color
Complexion of your pigment
The same fight that lead people to walk-outs and sit-ins
It’s human rights for everybody
There is no difference
Live on! And be yourself!
When I was in church
They taught me something else
If you preach hate at the service
Those words aren’t anointed
And that Holy Water
That you soak in
Is then poisoned
When everyone else
Is more comfortable
Remaining voiceless
Rather than fighting for humans
That have had their rights stolen
I might not be the same
But that’s not important
No freedom ’til we’re equal
Damn right I support it

And I remember what hip-hop was supposed to be about, before the guns, bitches and bling. About telling YOUR truth, YOUR reality, what’s real on YOUR street. Glad a few get that still.
And I’m touched he’s spoken out on behalf of his uncles right to get married, or do what they want to do…

As an aside: I’m far from happy about the assimilation of hetero-normative behaviour, the whole cringeworthy ‘in a long term loving stable relationship’ tombstone phrase as if all others are dirty, wrong or inverted…but I support those who want to fight for gay marriage because I think it will shift perception as a whole. Shame rather than challenging the predominant ideology that 1+1 and 0.4 cats and/or children = the norm that some LGBT are supporting rather than a more radical and queer reappraisal of what being married, partnered or what a family is in 21st century? I just hope it doesn’t become a straitjacket or something used to shut out those who don’t fit with the new ‘norms’ – as more funnily pointed out in that Gay Men/Women will Marry Your Partners meme by the straight response. I’m waiting for the Polyamorous Open Queer Folks Won’t Marry Your Girl/Boyfriends Just Have Nice Times With Them video. Might wait a long time for that one…
