As an ex-artist (well certainly in the traditional sense; John quite rightly said you can’t train to be an artist) you tend to be critical of art you see, it either falls into the camp of ‘I could do that, why should I buy it?’ or ‘I can’t do that’. Certainly in the latter case and something I would buy if I had the money is the work of Aaron Smith – combining my love of beards, Victoriana/Edwardiana and most importantly takes a fresh approach. I featured some of this series on my Tumblr ages ago but the newer ones deserve a repost.

You might have guessed I am not a fan of retro-nostalgia, coining and remixing the phrase recently “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to remix it” (sorry George) but I’m not opposed to people taking elements from the past or present and doing something new with it – how could I be against that when artists have been doing that since the dawn of time? Well probably a little after the dawn of time…anyway.

But I digress – I love these paintings, and wish I had money to buy them.
