Strange how conversations go, a discussion about early DJ Fresh (my how he’s changed, from breakbeat drum and bass to aping like the Cataracts or LMFAO?) to Aphrodite with Shiggi which then lead me to ‘Aphrodite, in her see through nightie…‘ which as well as probably being a Pete Seeger lift, is by the Edgar Broughton Band.
I’d not paid much attention to psych/garage bands, even when being namedropped by late 80s and 90’s bands (especially Arthur Lee and Love I seemed to remember was being namedropped ALL the time) or knew much about them til I started to listen to more eclectic long mixes from the likes of David Holmes, and later on Tom Middleton & Fred Deakin. In fact it was David Holmes Essential Mix where he played a really strange track ‘There’s No Vibration But Wait!’ and I went out and bought the Edgar Broughton Band album and heard the strange Aphrodite track.
The bent man’s mind lies inside the head on the ground floor
Where ya know the rats have been
Kid beware, he’s everywhere.
The picture says things, I want the negative kid.
The man’s mind is now walking up the stairs,
If he’s like they say all four of ’em
Inside his head riding on top of that hill of a helluva body.
Negative – Negative.
Let me look speaks cultured word wizened
Tongue fucked up now he has to suck up
Goes to picture
“drop your pants picture!”
Kid’s negatives spill out of his head in disbelief
The words crept away and she cleaned the dusty doors.
She is his mother – hello mother.
Negative – Negative.
It was never the same, that’s for sure
Kid says, here, take the lot word bender, and fuck your vibrations
I take ’em he’ll think some more, no doubt
Still love it, it’s totally bonkers…
And they also created one of the first mashups (well the medley/singing one song over another)
