Kraftwerk Kover Kollection 7 (and 1-6)

I’d posted about the many talented Strictly Kev aka DJ Food before and his Kraftwerk Kover Kollection long mixes for Solid Steel Radio last year, and was sad then that I couldn’t find the other mixes. Well Kev decided March was Kraftwerk month, blogging about them every day and my birthday came early he posted all the previous Kraftwerk Kover long mixes, and to end the month a new mix #7 with LeeDM101’s excellent Radioactive Tubular Girls (you can see the video I made for it here). And the Optigang Pocket Calculator cover which is brilliant.

Here are the previous mixes, 1-6 with download via Soundcloud. I especially recommend 2 and 3 if you’ve not heard them, back to back. I was blown away when listening to them while walking, just kept them on constant repeat, and #6 is a really special mix with the New David covers.

Soundhog – Whole Lotta Helter Skelter

Wasn’t going to post this since I’m playing this bootleg in the next Radio Clash podcast, but it’s tearing up the blogosphere and even just been played on Radio 6Music so I thought Soundhog’s Led Zeppelin vs Beatles mashup – sorry bootleg :-P (sH hates the mashup term) deserved posting twice for those few people who haven’t heard it. It’s ace, wasn’t sure on first listen but really grew on me the second. Love the ‘I’ve got blisters on my fingers!’ bit and Macca moaning about singing the high bits. Well deserved love this is getting – 17000 plays on Soundcloud in the last few days, and download is over here.

Blake’s Junction 7

Been getting into Tomorrow’s People and Blake 7 again and found this short film, which features Mark Heap, Johnny Vegas, Martin Freeman. Mackenzie Crook and Peter Tuddenham (original voice of Orac). Very funny, as imagining that they’ve turned up at Newport Pagnell at 3am continuing their travels in a Volvo and caravan, and well, Servalan…well you’d have to watch for that.

Part two is here:

Andrew in Drag (Ukelele version)

First things first, and if you know me well you’ll know what I’ll say: since when did Stephin Merritt become a bear?!?

Lovely version of Andrew in Drag by the Magnetic Fields on the Ukelele as part of Bet Fit Sessions…it brings out his wonderfully lugubrious and very distinctive voice. This song has been haunting 6Music’s airwaves until fairly recently, although strangely later on they edited out the ‘fag’ bit, which I found strange. I assumed some clueless queen complained…I mean if a faggot can’t use or reclaim the fag word, who can?

EDIT: Apparently yes he is a bear now (I knew he worked with LD, must’ve rubbed off, LOL!) and hung around the Kings Arms while in London recently…shame I never do that cos there aren’t any actually bearded guys there. And yes I do like pocket bears and as I’ve never really taken much close attention to what he looks like (still can’t believe he’s the same guy in those 90’s videos) so that could’ve been a fun conversation…

I need to go write a song Magnetic Fields imaginary story style now: ‘I Tried To Pick Up A Pocket Bear (It was Stephin Merritt In Drag)’
