A post about Salma Agha & Sabina on Facebook meant I went on a little Disco Bollywood trip. Above is a clip from Disco Dancer, an 1982 Bollywood film I’d really love to see. ‘Somebody dances here, somebody dances there’ indeed. This was sung by the mighty Usha Uthup who has been played on Radio Clash in the past, but pretty sure that’s not her in the video.
And people will know the Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Aaja song as MIA used it in one of her songs:
Interestingly someone has re-released the Hindi ABBA Salma & Sabina (white label so unnofficial I guess) – I’d love it digitally but this is vinyl only. Yes you guessed it – and played on the show before it’s Hindi versions of ABBA songs like this (long term listeners of RC would’ve heard Dancing Queen off this album):
And it wasn’t alone in this craze, here’s the 1987 ‘Dance Dance’ with robot dancing! And scratching! (obviously no-one like the disco had told them it had passed as a fad years previously) – here’s Super Dancer:
And earlier 1981’s Armaan a song called ‘Ramba Ho’ again by Usha Uthup which you might think sounds familiar (blatant rip off of Gibson Brothers ‘Que Sera Mi Vida’ with some ‘I Feel Love’ thrown in) :
And One Two Cha Cha Cha…that’s the way I like it…KC and the Sunshine Band meets India in 1978’s Shalimar
