PPL has released it’s list of the most played songs of the decade– sadly number one is that song from the middle class dinner party-bothering Snow Patrol and that excrable Chasing Cars track that usually stands in for serious drama scenes on telly and then pisses all over them.
1. Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol (2006)
2. Shine – Take That (2006)
3. I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ – Scissor Sisters (2006)
4. Love It When You Call – The Feeling (2005)
5. About You Now – Sugababes (2007)
6. Rule The World – Take That (2007)
7. You’re Beautiful – James Blunt (2004)
8. I Predict A Riot – Kaiser Chiefs (2004)
9. Can’t Get You Out of My Head – Kylie Minogue (2001)
10. Crazy – Gnarls Barkley (2006)
The rest of the list isn’t much better – Take That, The Feeling, James Blunt, not a great Sugababes one, the only rays of light are Scissor Sisters, Kylie, Kaiser Chiefs and Crazy by Gnarls Barkley…interestingly the Daily Telegraph blog agrees, questioning whether the likes of Gary Lightbody and co. and James Blunt really are the best songs the decade could offer (I concur a hearty no). also making Crazy #1 in their alternate list…interestingly several of those were played tonight, and Paper Planes and Crazy in Love are DJ gems.
Damn I just made a list post about lists, something I swore I’d never do. Shoot me now…I’ll distract you with this excellent Top of the Pops performance of Crazy was linked to from the comments of that article – really it does still sound fresh, and to my mind is one of the real stand out songs of the last decade. And my god, Cee-Lo can sing. I’m surprised shortly after this TOTP was cancelled, with spine-tingling live performances like this.
