Greg Wilson mix - woodcut of a 2-track tape machine by AI

Best mix ever?

Well the legend that is Greg Wilson is well known, but with the Music Played In Discotheques mix he had me at Chairmen of the Board and George McCrae’s woefully underloved ‘Rock Your Baby’ showing his true 70’s northern soul credentials! The idea was to use tracks from 1972-75 for the Tate Gallery in Liverpool, and shows how important and influential those years were.

As he wrote

“I couldn’t have wished for a better vibe – you sometimes look forward to something, but build it up too much in your head and it doesn’t live up to expectations, so it’s great to be able to say that this was everything I’d hoped for and more. I’d described it as a ‘happening’, which is exactly what it was – a random gathering in a unique situation, brought together to listen to two hours of music played in discotheques. These were all records from the years 72-75, which you’d have heard in the nightspots of Merseyside back then, but now they’ve found their way into a Liverpool art gallery all these years on, where they retained their magical power to uplift and unite.

Ahead of the event, I’d imagined the people on the dancefloor as living art, which certainly proved to be the case. We succeeded in creating a spontaneous situation that will resonate with those who were there for a long time to come, and I’ve no doubt that we’ve left plenty of spirit in the room amongst all of the sculptures.”

Even if you are not a 70’s soul and funk purist you’ll enjoy this mix as there are floor-filling classics galore and no chin-stroking ‘pure rare groove’-isms, thankfully. Just good music.

And it’s over at Soundcloud Mixcloud, for free:

Thanks to BristleKRS for the nod.
